Simple Ways to Manage Indoor Allergy Symptoms

If the pollen count is low, you’re inside, and you’re still sneezing over and over, you may have indoor allergies. Common indoor allergies include dust mites, molds, and pets. Immune responses to these allergens can cause the same allergy symptoms as pollen allergies: itchy, watery eyes; runny nose; coughing; wheezing; and a sore throat.

So how are you supposed to manage allergy symptoms from these indoor allergy foes? Keep reading for simple ways to manage your indoor allergy symptoms.

Pets

If you are allergic to your pets, try leaving them outside if you can. If that isn’t possible because of the weather or your neighborhood, etc., try these tips.

First, have a designated bed and play area for your dog or cat that is away from your own bedroom and office areas. Do your best to keep these doors closed if at all possible. This will limit the amount of pet dander on your bed or desk.

Next, keep your dog groomed and brushed. This will not only cut down on dander, it will also prevent your dog from bringing in lots of dirt and outdoor pollens that may only make your problems worse.

Wash your hands after petting your dog or cat, every single time. If you can avoid touching your face or eyes after playing with your pet, you’ll be grateful.

Vacuum frequently to cut down on pet hair.

Dust

If you are allergic to dust mites, the following tips may help.

Use a mattress cover and be sure to wash your bedding and pillow cases frequently.

Vacuum frequently and use your vacuum’s wand, if it has one, to dust/vacuum in places that are hard to reach, like under the bed or refrigerator.

Consider replacing wall-to-wall carpet with hard surface flooring. Also, you can replace drapes or heavy curtains with blinds or window coverings that are easy to clean.

Mold

Reduce humidity to protect against mold. Keep your windows and doors closed when possible. Consider a de-humidifier to keep moisture out of your home. Mold thrives in moist environments.

Limit your houseplants. Houseplants are great areas of moisture and can cause mold.

Also be sure to check your home for leaks to make sure mold isn’t growing under the house or in the bathroom.
