Spring in San Antonio is one of the best times of year to get outside—longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of sunshine. But for allergy sufferers, it also marks the start of peak pollen season. If you’ve ever come back from a run or outdoor workout feeling worse than when you started, you’re not alone.

The good news? You don’t have to choose between staying active and managing your allergies. With a few smart adjustments—like timing your workouts right, minimizing pollen exposure, and knowing when to take things indoors—you can keep moving without paying for it later.

Exercise at the right time of day

Early morning is usually the best time to exercise if you’re trying to avoid pollen. If early mornings aren’t possible then later in the evening is usually a good time as well. Mid-day and Mid-afternoon are usually worse for pollen because there is more heat and more wind then. Pro-tip: check the pollen forecast before you head out!

Optimize Your Post-Workout Routine

When you come home from your workout, there are a few simple things you can do to protect yourself from inhaling more pollen particulates.

First, leave your shoes by the door. Wearing shoes throughout the house will only track pollen further into your home. Next, wash your clothes, or at least put them in the hamper and away from the rest of your clean clothes. Finally, shower as soon as you can to remove pollen from your hair and skin. Pro-tip: DO NOT collapse onto your couch or bed as soon as you get home; you’ll spread pollen to all of those places.

Know when to say when

Sometimes, an outdoor workout just isn’t worth it. If pollens that you’re allergic to are particularly high, or if it’s a very dry and windy day consider skipping your outdoor workout in favor of yoga or a workout at your local fitness center or community center. Pro-tip: A run in the rain can be a great way to get in your outdoor workout and avoid pollen too!
